climb for children AND EDUCATION
hEllo!
i am briyan
I am a Kenyan educator, currently working in Coastal Kenya in the counties of Kilifi and Kwale to improve learning using an innovative methodology, Learning through Play with Technology. I am passionate about education and enabling children achieve their full potential. In my free time, I love to hike! Hiking challenges me to want to learn more about my strengths and gives me opportunities to make new friends and cultures.
I am embarking on a new journey combining my two passions, education and hiking. Through my upcoming climbs I want to raise awareness and resources to help equip schools in coastal Kenya with more books to improve reading and writing for children in Grades 1 to 3.
MT. Kenya
On August 30th 2023 I set out with a team of 26 mountaineers to climb Mt.Kenya which is the 2nd highest mountain in Africa and the highest Mountain in Kenya. The climb to the top would take 4 days, we were on the Chogoria Route which is the most scenic route when climbing Mt. Kenya
Climbing Mount Kenya wasn't just about conquering a peak; it was an expedition that revealed the indomitable human spirit and left us with memories etched in our hearts—friends found, challenges conquered, and the splendor of a Kenyan sunrise eternally cherished."
Mt. Kenya Summit Friends
On my Mt. Kenya climb I was joined by a group of strangers who would later become my friends and the interactions and stories we have shared throughout the climb(s) build me up to be able to take on this challenge and cause.
Life lessons from mountaineering
Mountain Climbing has provided great life lessons for me: After climbing Mt. Kenya I learned:
1. Resilience in the Face of Adversity: When faced with physical and mental challenges we persevered, pushing through doubts and fatigue. This experience reminds me that in life, we often encounter obstacles, but with determination and a resilient mindset, we can overcome them.
2. The Importance of Human Connection: Climbing with a group of strangers and forming deep connections during the climb highlights the significance of human connections. I have made new freinds and life connections that I believe will be life long.
3. The Beauty of Nature and Perspective: The sunrise from Mount Kenya's summit underscores the beauty and wonder of the natural world. It's a reminder of the importance of preserving our planet's natural landscapes. Witnessing the sunrise from the mountain offered a perspective on the grandeur of our world.
My learning journey continues. On December 27th 2023 I will embark on my biggest climb yet! Mt. Kilimanjaro in Moshi Tanzania. Mt. Kilimanjaro stands at 19340 Ft. above sea level and is feted to be the highest mountain in Africa. During the climb I anticipate to cover 72 KMs over 6 days to reach the highest point, Uhuru Peak.

climb for children and education
After the Mt. Kenya Climb, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local school in Mombasa and conduct an English and Mathematics learning outcomes assessment for learners in Grades 3 to 5. It was shocking to find how behind their learning milestones they were. Without these crucial foundational sckills, their potential for success in other learning areas is hampered. This led me to volunteer at this school for an additional two months, providing additional learning support to the most at need learners. The change in the learners was inspiring.
As an educator this challenged me to think about supporting children who are in Grades 4 to 6 and are lagging in their education milestones. In my experiences, schools and parents have very limited resources to buy additional enough books and materials for learners which is among the contributing factors to poor learning outcomes.
I am making this climb to raise funds for books for 2 Primary Schools in Mombasa County and a community library in Bangladesh slum in Mombasa - Kenya. The books will help improve opportunities for reading and writing and hence build the children’s literacy skills as well as boost creativity and learning to learn, core competencies under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya.
I am not only doing this to raise funds for books and the learners but also showing them what is possible if you set your mind on a goal, focus and work hard to achieve it. I am inviting friends, colleagues, well wishers and partners to be part of this worthy cause.
